The founder of the Koç Group, our late father Vehbi Koç, was a very important person who left his mark on Turkey and deeply affected all of us with his vision and foresight. As a person with high moral standards, he was always sensitive to the problems of the society he grew up in and tried to produce solutions to solve them. Vehbi Koç believed in love for people and used to say, 'You have to give back some of what your country has given you. This can be in the form of infrastructure, equipment, or scholarships.' With this understanding, his first major donation was to 'Türk Kuşu'. While looking for a solution to institutionalize and sustain charitable works, his first trip to America in 1946 was a turning point in his life. For 23 years, he worked tirelessly with different prime ministers, governments, and parliamentarians to establish private foundations, enact the necessary law, and ensure that charitable donations were tax-exempt. In the end, he succeeded and established the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Turkey's first private foundation bearing his name. Thus, he set an example for the establishment of many new private foundations; he led the way. In 2009, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Vehbi Koç Foundation. Our Foundation, which continues its work to keep Vehbi Koç's principle of 'if my country exists, so do I' alive and to pass it on to future generations, has touched the lives of thousands of people on this long journey, guided them, and enlightened them... To date, we have provided scholarships to tens of thousands of children through our Foundation and continue to do so. Hundreds of thousands of students benefit from the educational institutions we have established or built and donated to the state. With the nurses we have trained for 36 years, we have almost changed the status of the profession. The American Hospital, the Vehbi Koç Emergency Service at Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital, and Ankara Eye Hospital help thousands of people regain their health and save their lives. Sadberk Hanım, Rahmi Koç and the Suna and İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi museums in Antalya, the Aphrodisias studies, all play important roles in preserving and promoting our culture. Our ongoing contributions to the TEV, TEMA, and TAP Foundations, which the late Vehbi Koç helped establish, also continue.
Vehbi Koç Ödülü
Merhum Vehbi Koç, yaşamının son yıllarında kendi adına verilecek, adını yaşatacak uluslararası bir ödül arzu ediyordu. Bizler evlatları olarak, onu uluslararası ödül yerine, Harvard Üniversitesi’nde Türk Dili ve Kültürü Vehbi Koç Kürsüsü kurulmasına ve ödülün ülkemize dönük olmasına ikna ettik. Ödül fikrini, O’nun vefatının ardından, uzun çalışmalar neticesinde hayata geçirdik. Eğitim, sağlık ve kültür alanlarında ülke yararına hizmetler veren, insanların yaşam kalitesinin artırılmasına katkıda bulunan kişi ve kurumları Vehbi Koç Ödülleri ile taçlandırmayı gelenek haline getirdik.
Bu ödülün, aynı zamanda ödüllendirilen çalışmaların gelişmesine imkan verecek şekilde maddi bir destek de sağlamasını arzu ettik. Bu nedenle ödülün parasal tutarını Türkiye’de benzeri olmayan bir düzeye yükselttik. Başarılı kişi ve kuruluşa Vehbi Koç Ödülü heykelciğinin yanı sıra 100.000 $ olarak belirlenen bu parasal ödülü de takdim ettik.
Vehbi Bey’in bizlere bıraktığı emaneti en iyi şekilde koruyabilmenin ve geliştirebilmenin gururunu yaşıyoruz. Gururlandığımız bir başka konu ise, Vakfımızın 40. kuruluş yıldönümünde Carnegie Hayırseverlik madalyasını almamızdır. Aldığımız bu ödül aynı zamanda, Merhum Vehbi Koç’un bir hayalinin daha gerçeğe dönüşmesidir. Bizler için de bundan sonra yapacaklarımız için çok önemli bir itici güç……
